Local Tipperary TY students meet with Taoiseach at BT Young Scientist Exhibition

Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed, Thurles has wished congratulations to their TY students Cormac Sheehy, Maria Ryan, and to their mentor Ms Ciara Phelan, who travelled to the RDS to represent the school at the BT Young Scientist Exhibition.

They say it was an amazing achievement to qualify for the final stages to showcase their project titled ‘Behind the smiles: the silent struggle of teenage burnout’.

With so much preparation gone into their project, Cormac and Maria got on exceedingly well in their three rounds of judging, which they felt built their confidence and communication skills hugely.

So impressive was their project that President Michael D Higgins selected it as one of the projects he wished to review.

Cormac and Maria also met Taoiseach Simon Harris, who expressed great interest in their project, which investigates the current issue of teenage burnout and stress.

He agreed that teenage burnout is an important issue and even requested that Cormac and Maria send their project to him for a closer look.

Both students agreed that it was a fantastic experience and they highly recommend other students in the school to consider entering projects next year.

While they acknowledged there is a bit of work involved, they thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and deemed it immensely enjoyable and rewarding.
