Michael Dempsey, from the Moycarkey-Borris Littleton Men’s Shed and Community History Group is pictured to the right with Christy Clancy, writer and performer of the one man play, “Heroes and Ghosts – The Life and Times of Larry Slattery”.
The Community History Group hosted the play in the Horse and Jockey Hotel last August, as part of National Heritage Week.
The play subsequently won a County Heritage Award from the National Heritage Council as well as featuring on TG4. Christy performed the play to a full house and to great acclaim from the audience present.
The play tells the fascinating story of local man, Larry Slattery, who became the first prisoner of war in World War II.
Larry’s amazing journey took him through prisoner of war camps as the war raged on. Here Larry met with much adversity but he showed tremendous resilience to overcome all challenges. Following his liberation in May 1945 the next chapter of Larry’s extraordinary life unfolded.
This involved life in London, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, a second spell in Germany and marriage.
Following his early death in 1972, Larry was honoured in a remarkable way by his ex-prisoner of war comrades.
The play will be performed again in The Horse and Jockey Hotel on Friday the 7th and Saturday the 8th of February at 8pm
Funds raised will go towards supporting autism classes at St Kevin’s NS, Littleton; Christy is a former principal of the school.
It is interesting to note that Larry’s father, Michael, was principal there also from 1927 to 1945.
Tickets, costing €10, are available at The Horse and Jockey Hotel, St Kevin’s NS Littleton, local shops, online at Evenbrite.ie and if still available will be sold at the door on the night. Support for the fundraiser would be greatly appreciated.
