The Ukrainian flag
There are 22 centres in Tipperary housing 733 people fleeing the war in Ukraine.
That’s according to statistics Eibhlin Byrne, National Lead on Civic Engagement at the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, outlined in her presentation to Tipperary County Council’s monthly meeting.
During the debate that followed, Labour Cllr Michael ‘Chicken’ Brennan of Clonacody House near Fethard spoke of his and his wife’s experience of providing accommodation for eight Ukrainian refugees.
He said they didn’t go looking for the contract, the authorities approached them.
He spoke of the time and care they gave to looking after these residents and was concerned that those staying in bigger accommodation centres don’t get the proper care they need.
The majority of their Ukrainian guests have found work and a family of four were in the process of moving to a modular home, he added.
