Eighteen of the Arts Act grants approved at Tipperary County Council's monthly meeting will go to south Tipperary based organisations

Eighteen south Tipperary music, choral, drama and arts groups have secured a share of Tipperary County Council's €65,000 Arts Act Grant allocation for this year with its Arts Officer reporting nearly a 50% surge in demand for the financial aid since the end of the Covid pandemic.

Councillors approved Arts Act Grants ranging in size from €500 to €5,500 for 43 organisations involved in the arts throughout the county at Tipperary County Council’s April meeting in Clonmel last week.

Five theatre groups, four musical theatre societies and three choirs are among the south Tipperary beneficiaries of the grants which will go towards funding the cost of drama, musical productions, choral performances and workshops. Other grant recipients will put the funding towards visual art and creative writing events and workshops.

Tipperary County Council Arts Officer Melanie Scott told the Council meeting the Arts Act Grants Scheme’s aim was to increase engagement in the arts in the county. She reported a marked 48% increase in demand for these grants in the last three years since the end of the Covid pandemic.

She noted the elected members had the foresight to increase the Council’s funding allocation under this scheme.

“This has enabled us to respond to the increased demand,” she said.

Ms Scott reported there were eight new applicants to the scheme recommended for grants this year. One application was not eligible for a grant under the terms of the scheme and one application was not recommended for support.

The 43 grants she recommended for approval were proposed by Clonmel Fianna Fáil Cllr Siobhán Ambrose and seconded by Fine Gael Cllr Phyll Bugler from Ballina.
