Newport has taken a step towards a more sustainable future with the completion of a €7m upgrade to its wastewater treatment plant. The investment, welcomed by Deputy Michael Lowry, aims to improve water quality in the Mulkear River, ensure compliance with national and European regulations, and support local development.

The plant, now capable of serving a population equivalent of 3,600, has seen its performance and capacity substantially enhanced.

According to Paul Fallon, portfolio manager at Uisce Éireann, “The completion of this project is a significant step in ensuring modern, efficient wastewater infrastructure that supports the needs of the community while protecting the local environment.”

The works included the construction of two screened stormwater chambers, a new inlet works, a stormwater storage tank, secondary treatment with final settlement tanks, and upgraded electrical controls.

The Newport upgrade forms part of a broader programme in Tipperary, which recently saw similar enhancements at Ballina and Cahir, aimed at bolstering critical infrastructure to accommodate sustainable growth.

Uisce Éireann, which oversees all public water and wastewater services in Ireland, emphasises that continuous investment in such infrastructure is essential to meet housing and economic needs while safeguarding water supplies and the environment.
