Tipperary fire stations open doors tomorrow for National Fire Safety Week

Cashel Fire Station will throw open its doors tomorrow, Saturday, October 18, as part of National Fire Safety Week. The station, tucked at Wallers Lot on the Clonmel Road near the M8 motorway, will welcome visitors from 10.30am to 2.30pm.

Meanwhile, staff from Cahir Fire Station will set up in the Castle Street car park, Cahir, offering fire safety guidance to the public between 9.30am and 1.30pm.

Across Tipperary, fire stations are urging residents to think seriously about fire risks in their homes, take practical steps to prevent incidents, and be prepared should disaster strike. In case of fire, the public is advised to dial 112 or 999 and request the fire service, evacuate the premises, and remain outside until the emergency is resolved.

The theme for Fire Safety Week 2025 is ‘Together Against Fire.’ The campaign seeks to protect the county’s most vulnerable through small but crucial measures, encouraging neighbours, friends, and family to share knowledge and vigilance.

Statistics underline the need for such caution. Older adults living alone are disproportionately affected, with the average age of a fatality in a house fire standing at 69. Residents are encouraged to check that vulnerable members of the community have working smoke alarms, unobstructed escape routes, and regularly cleaned chimneys or flues.

The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management stresses the importance of having functioning smoke alarms on every floor of a home and testing them frequently. The Community Smoke Alarm Scheme offers free smoke alarms to at-risk households. For installation, local fire services can assist, or further details are available at FireIreland.ie.

Fire stations are scattered throughout the county, including Tipperary town, Cashel, Cahir, Clonmel, Carrick-on-Suir, Thurles, Templemore, Newport, Roscrea, Borrisokane, Nenagh, and Cloughjordan. There is an ongoing demand for personnel, with applications accepted continuously and interviews scheduled regularly.
