Superintendent Niall O’Connell of Clonmel Garda Station confirmed that high-visibility patrols will be reintroduced in Clonmel, with additional coverage extending to Cahir and Cashel.
“Starting from today, the 1st of December and running up until Christmas Eve, this is an operation we ran last year. We did a review and an assessment of it in January and February of this year, and re-launched it in March,” said Superintendent Niall O’Connell of Clonmel Garda Station. “Again, we’re just increasing the additional patrols.”
The initiative is designed to reduce anti-social behaviour and respond to community concerns. It will see Gardaí engage with local businesses, shoppers, and the general public in town centres, reflecting discussions that An Garda Síochána has held with Clonmel community stakeholders.
A community engagement van has also been secured to support the operation. Equipped with audio-visual facilities and internal seating, the van will provide a space for members of the public to interact with Gardaí directly.
Further strengthening local policing, a dedicated community policing unit for Clonmel and the wider Tipperary South area has been launched. The unit will operate under a structured roster aligned with the Midlands Working Time Agreement 2024, enabling Gardaí to maintain a proactive presence in schools, attend community meetings, and increase visibility across the area.
“The community policing unit will enhance the extensive community policing activities already carried out by Gardaí stationed throughout Tipperary South,” Superintendent Niall O’Connell of Clonmel Garda Station added.
The Christmas patrols, which were introduced last year to positive feedback from residents, businesses, and local representatives, will continue on a monthly basis and include additional foot patrols. Gardaí on overtime will also provide coverage in Cahir and Cashel.
Superintendent Niall O’Connell of Clonmel Garda Station stressed that the aim of the high-visibility presence is to reassure the public and support local commerce, social life, and community safety during the festive period.
