Caitlin Tierney, who was selected before Christmas to represent the Thurles branch of the Lions Club, was crowned the overall national winner at the weekend.

In a statement, Ursuline Secondary School paid tribute to her achievement, saying: “Huge congratulations to Caitlin Tierney! We are incredibly proud to congratulate Caitlin on winning the Lions Club Young Ambassador Award of the 21st Century.

Chosen before Christmas to represent the Thurles Branch of Lions Club, Caitlin went on to impress at national level and today was crowned the overall national winner.”

The school highlighted the values behind the award, stating: “The award recognises outstanding community involvement and meaningful connection with the work of the Lions Club – something Caitlin truly embodies.”

As national winner, Caitlin will now progress to the European stage of the competition in Germany. The school added: “Next stop: Europe! Caitlin will now represent Ireland in the European stage of the competition in Germany.”

Her success also brings further opportunities. “She also receives a €1,000 bursary to donate to a charity of her choice or a community project, along with a 3-week international exchange in a country of her choice (this summer or next). She will also take part in the UK finals for the experience,” the statement said.

The school concluded by describing the achievement as fully merited, calling it “an amazing achievement and so well deserved.”

Another Tipperary student, Rhys Coppinger of Cashel Community School, also took part in the competition. He represented the Cashel Lions Club after being selected as Cashel Lions Club Young Person of the Year 2025.
