Independent TD Mattie McGrath calls for public protest over planned demolition of 52 homes

TD warns demolition plan is at odds with government policy addressing the housing crisis

Independent TD Mattie McGrath calls for public protest over planned demolition of 52 homes

Tipperary County Council has applied for permission to demolish 52 houses at Ballypadeen, Cashel, under a Part 8 planning application.

The proposed works are described by the council as ‘Site Remediation Works’, although no remediation is planned. Instead, the houses would be demolished and the site left vacant, with foundation pads remaining in place.

Mattie McGrath, the local Independent TD, has criticised the proposal, stating that the houses were built with full planning permission and are structurally compliant.

He warned that proceeding with demolition would impose a substantial cost on taxpayers and result in long-term environmental damage, including large volumes of waste and high carbon emissions.

“This appears fundamentally at odds with stated government policy on addressing the housing crisis and increasing housing supply,” Deputy McGrath said.

He has called on members of the public to attend a protest at the entrance to the Ballypadeen site on Saturday, 31 January, at 1.45pm.

“Please attend this protest to express concern about the Government’s intended actions at a time of acute housing shortage. Without public action, these houses are set to be demolished. Even if you do not live locally, please consider attending. This is a national issue that affects everyone,” he said.

Deputy McGrath has urged people to make their voices heard during the public consultation process.
