A study of mining heritage in North Tipperary has been named the Tipperariana Book of the Year for 2026, an award presented annually by the Fethard Historical Society.

The winning title, Silvermines, A Heritage of Mines and Miners, Interpreting an Ancient Mining Landscape, brings together a series of essays examining the long history of mining in the Silvermines area.

The volume was compiled by Greg Finnegan and Laura McSherry, both of whom are also involved in a current initiative to develop a hydro electricity project at the former mine site.

The Tipperariana Book of the Year recognises the best publication each year dealing with some aspect of County Tipperary.

To mark the award, the editors will receive a specially commissioned ceramic artwork created by artist Doreen Saurus, designed to reflect the themes of the book.

The announcement comes ahead of the Fethard Historical Society’s annual Tipperariana Book Fair, which took place on Sunday February 8 at the Ballroom in Fethard.

The event, running from noon until 4.30pm, forms a central part of the Society’s efforts to promote and support Tipperary writers.

Authors with recent publications are offered free space at the fair, providing an opportunity for direct engagement between writers and readers.

Book dealers travelled from across Ireland to attend the fair, with a wide range of publications on offer, including material aimed at younger readers. A pop-up café operated on site throughout the afternoon.

Alongside new titles and commercial stalls, visitors were able to browse the Society’s own book stand, which featured donated books covering a broad range of genres.

Proceeds from sales at the stall, together with the admission charge on the day, will contribute to funding the Society’s work. Music was provided by Clonmel pianist Eamonn O’Malley, offering background accompaniment without intruding on conversation.

The Society also facilitated book donations in advance of the fair, with contributors invited to deliver items to the Ballroom on the Saturday between 10am and 3pm.
