Following the announcement of the allocation of funding, Minister O’Brien said: “Advancing the new national road projects in the current National Development Plan and the Sectoral Investment Plan for Transport is a priority for this government, along with the protection and renewal of the existing national, regional and local road network. Government is committed to assisting affected local authorities with financial support to assist with the aftermath of Storm Chandra. My Department is liaising with affected counties, who are continuing to compile and assess damage on the ground to enable proper estimation of the total damage caused and the estimated cost of remediation.

“The allocations I’m announcing today will enable multiple major new road projects on the national road network to progress, including those that are at or are close to construction. This will enable greater connectivity across our country, support economic development, and deliver safer roads and less congested towns and communities.

“Projects such as the N5 Ballaghaderreen to Scramoge, the M28 and the Adare Bypass, which are currently in construction, demonstrate the clear commitment to the ongoing development of our national road network. Taken together with the new road projects which are at an earlier stage of the project lifecycle, an increased number of new national roads projects have been allocated funding this year.

“A new two-year work programme under the Community Involvement Scheme for regional and local roads is starting this year with €16.2 million being allocated to the scheme in 2026. This is an increase of €1.4 million in funding from last year, upholding the Programme for Government commitment to increase funding for the Community Involvement Scheme.”a

Speaking on the newly allocated funding, Tipperary North TD Michael Lowry issued a statement, expressing his delight with the amount given to Tipperary.

He said: “I welcome the funding of €8.4million allocated to Tipperary County Council and I am pleased that several projects which I have promoted are included in the scheme of works.

“The improvement of road surfaces and footpaths throughout my Constituency has been a priority for me since the formation of the new Government. Significant works have already been carried out throughout area and today’s announcement is further tangible evidence of that commitment.

“A total of over €2 million in funding has been secured for Thurles projects. €1.6 million has been secured to deliver significant public realm and infrastructure improvements in Thurles town centre, providing a major boost to the town’s accessibility, safety and long-term economic vitality.

“This new funding will allow for road surface and footpath enhancement works along Stradavoher Road from Liberty Square to Dunnes Stores roundabout. The works will improve connectivity and accessibility, supporting both residential and commercial activity.

“The funding will also allow the County Council to advance Phase 2 of the redevelopment of Liberty Square which will build on the transformative progress already made, further enhancing the public realm, pedestrian experience and overall attractiveness of the town centre.

“€200,000 has been allocated to progress the proposed critical safety improvement works at Turtulla Cross aimed at addressing longstanding safety concerns. These works will include the construction of a new roundabout designed to improve traffic flow, enhance road safety, and significantly reduce collision risk at this busy junction.

“The design stage of Inner relief Road will be concluded, and the project progressed to tender stage.

“The Thurles Bypass is included in the current National Development Plan. It must now be progressed through the various project phases.

“The council will be funded to revisit the previous Bypass project proposal starting with a view to formulating a new scheme. This funding marks another significant step forward in the ongoing regeneration of Thurles, ensuring the town continues to grow in a sustainable, safe and economically progressive manner.

“I’m particularly pleased that the ongoing dangerous speeding issues through main street Ballina are to be addressed. €185,000 has been allocated to install traffic calming measures. This work will include a raised table, pedestrian crossings and safety signage.

“I’m glad that a project for Birdhill has been sanctioned at a cost of €380,000. This scheme involves extensive traffic calming measures, new footpaths and cycleway. The completed works will greatly enhance the beautiful village of Birdhill.”
