Seven drivers caught speeding up to 85km/h and one using a phone outside Tipperary school

Motorists have been reminded to exercise caution when travelling through school zones after several road traffic offences were detected outside a primary school in the Tipperary Town district.

Members of the Roads Policing Unit attached to An Garda Síochána in County Tipperary carried out monitoring of passing traffic during the morning drop off period.

The enforcement operation took place as pupils were arriving at school, a time when traffic volumes typically increase around school entrances.

Gardaí reported that conditions on the roads were challenging at the time. Heavy rain and strong winds were present during the monitoring period, adding an additional hazard for motorists travelling through the area.

Despite the conditions, a number of drivers were found to be travelling well above the posted speed limit.

During the check, seven speeding offences were detected along with one offence involving the use of a mobile phone while driving.

The location is a designated 50km/h zone, a limit intended to reduce risk in areas where children and families are likely to be present.

However, the speeds recorded by gardaí were significantly higher. The vehicles detected were travelling at 85km/h, 84km/h, 74km/h, 73km/h, 72km/h, 70km/h and 70km/h.

According to gardaí, each motorist involved was stopped during the operation. A prosecution has been initiated against all drivers detected committing the offences.

School zones are considered particularly sensitive areas for road safety, especially during the busy morning and afternoon periods when pupils are arriving or leaving school grounds.

Reduced speed limits are designed to give drivers more time to react and to help minimise the risk of collisions involving pedestrians.

In a statement accompanying the enforcement activity, gardaí emphasised the potentially serious consequences that can arise from a lapse in judgement behind the wheel.

“It takes one poor error in judgement to result in catastrophic consequences.”

The incident has prompted renewed calls from gardaí for drivers to remain vigilant and to respect speed limits when travelling through school areas, particularly when weather conditions further increase the risks of accidents on local roads.
