Christmas is coming and business is picking up sharply at Nenagh Country market, which is run in the town's New Institute every Friday.
“Every week now we can see more and more people coming in and the orders are starting to come in,” said market chairperson Alice Wallace.
Those hoping to bag a turkey, goose or duck for the Christmas table had better get their order in soon as Alice explained “they are nearly all booked at this stage”. The market has two local poultry suppliers from Borrisokane.
And with locally grown seasonal vegetables in stock, she pointed out that while they might not be straight and uniform, “what difference does that make. The flavour is perfect.”
The market is bright with colour over the spring and autumn with fresh cut flowers, and while they may not be readily available at this time of the year, Alice promised they will have flowers for Christmas as well as wreaths and table centres.
And what Christmas would not be complete without a piece of cake. “There is a great array of Christmas cakes - iced and not iced,” said Alice. “Some with brandy and some with whisky, which ever flavour you like yourself.”
However, the market is not confined to cakes and buns, as Alice revealed one of their youngest stallholders is a 13-year-old girl selling her own coleslaw to make a few bob pocketmoney.
They also have gluten-free produce as well as local honey and even homemade clothing.
“We have our regular customers and even the sons and daughters of regulars. We are here every Friday with good produce that is always consistent,” said Alice.
The market, which opens at 8am, will hold its final day before Christmas on Friday, December 23.
