The communities of Carrig and Ballycommon outside Nenagh last week celebrated the opening of their new school following an extensive refurbishment.

The project cost €2.2m and the opening was carried out by local TD Alan Kelly, who announced funding for the work in 2014 while he was Minister for the Environment.

“My announcement of funding for the school followed many meetings with the then Minister for Educationand& Skills Jan O'Sullivan and her predecessor Minister Ruiari Quinn, with the staff and board of management of the school, and former councilor Virginia O'Dowd,” he said.

Deputy Kelly said that Friday was a great celebration of a school with wonderful facilities.

Many people from the parish attended the opening, including former principal Liam Maloney; current staff and board of management and parents.

Friday also saw the official opening of the astroturf pitch by Kerry great Kieran Donaghy. The pitch was funded by the community working through the school's parent’s council.
