Doran demands answers on Thurles houses at Cabra Bridge

"These houses are ready to go and it is a crying shame that they are left vacant" - Cllr Doran.

Sinn Fein Councillor David Doran has demanded answers from officials of the Templemore Thurles Municipal District as to why houses built at Cabra Road, Thurles have not yet been occupied, even though the homes are completed.
This long running saga has generated much negative comment in the community as the state-of-the-art homes are effectively lying idle with the gates chained closed. And, a substantial wall constructed outside the development has also raised eyebrows with suggestions that the wall alone has cost thousands of Euro.
Cllr Doran, who was backed by Cllr Jim Ryan in his comments, told members of the Municipal District that he wanted the houses at Cabra to be allocated immediately and without any further delay.
“These houses are ready to go and it is a crying shame that they are left vacant for whatever reason, given that we have so many on our housing list waiting for homes,” Cllr Doran said.
He also requested that the housing Director of Services and senior staff come to the next meeting to explain what exactly is happening with these houses and to explain why such an extravagant boundary wall was built at this estate.
“I believe that this was a disgraceful waste of money and whoever sanctioned this should account for why they did so. The public are aghast with why state-of-the-art houses were built to top spec and then left idle and why such money could be spent on a wall. I have to say, I share their dismay that’s why I’m demanding answers and accountability here,” Cllr Doran said.
These Cabra houses had been in the planning process for many years and the expectation is that once they are occupied by the earmarked tenants, the nearby traveller encampment will be removed and the area around Cabra Bridge closed off. The occupants have been in residence at the location for many years but have, it is understood, agreed to move into the homes and off the roadside.
The housing section of Tipperary County Council have been dealing with this matter from the off and it is understood that officials will attend the October meeting of the Municipal District Council to address the issues raised by members.
