Allegations that a gang is running amok in Thurles Town Park, rendering it a no-go-area at times, are to be raised with An Garda Síochána at a meeting with Thurles Templemore Municipal District in December.
Independent Councillor Jim Ryan told members of the council at a meeting this week that an overseas student had recently been very seriously assaulted, ended up in hospital, and the student’s parents were forced to travel from overseas for an unscheduled visit to check up on their child.
“This is just one of a number of very serious assaults which have taken place in Thurles Town Park and parents are very concerned about what is going on there.
“This needs to be taken very seriously because there is a gang element running amuck in the Town Park and they are causing mayhem. It is basically one family we are talking about here causing the problems and Gardai will have to step in and take action.
“Our Town Park is a magnificent amenity but it is being ruined by this element and what is going on is giving Thurles a very bad name,” an angry Cllr Ryan said.
District administrator Sharon Scully told the members that the matter could be raised with the Gardai at the December meeting of the council.
