Borroway Rovers 4

Clodiagh Rangers B 1

Clodiagh’s run of good results ended on Sunday last against a talented Borroway side in the Tipperary Cup in Loughtagalla Park.

Clodiagh soaked up the early pressure from the First Division side quite well, with Niall Grant making a couple of fine saves.

But as the pressure began to mount Clodiagh’s put upon defence began to creak and it finally crumbled in the 38th minute as Jake Moore found himself in space and finished neatly over the flailing Grant in the Clodiagh goal.

Two penalties in quick succession, one converted, left Clodiagh with a mountain to climb by half time. The second half began badly for away side as they went down to ten men on 53 minutes, two more goals for Borroway shortly followed and the game threatened to turn into a rout for Clodiagh but they dug in and displayed some of the character that has been a signature feature of their season so far.

Pa Dwyer showed some fine determination after being moved to midfield and Clodiagh got a deserved consolation goal in the 81st minute when Paul Ryan’s long range effort bamboozled the Borroway keeper to give the score line a hint of respectability.

It must be said the score was a fair reflection of the different levels of the teams, Borroway Rovers in pole position to win the First Division, Clodiagh challenging for the Second, but Clodiagh didn’t disgrace themselves and can take a few useful lessons away from this challenging fixture.

Starting team: Niall Grant, Jack Butler, Enna Ryan, John Ryan, Stevie Gleeson, Patrick Clancy, Niall Shanahan, Paul Ryan, Tom Foot, Pa O’Dwyer, Paul Shanahan.

Subs used: Conor Ryan.
