Moyne Templetuohy claimed the Division 2 Mid League Final with a hard fought and evenly contested victory over Thurles Sarsfields in the recently opened new pitch in Gortnahoe last Sunday afternoon.

Overall, the men in green were probably slightly the better side on the day as they proved to be that little bit more clinical than their Thurles Sarsfields opponents, who had their chances but didn't make the most of them, despite a flurry of goal opportunities late on.

Sarsfields started the game the brighter, taking a 0-4 to 0-1 lead after ten minutes with points from Sean Collins (3) and a nice score from Michael Dwyer giving them a three point advantage.

They hit some poor wides to go with that as Moyne were slow to settle, but despite the lovely weather on the day, the downpour of rain earlier in the morning made the tightly cut surface like ice for the players, with the ball very hard to tie down for all the players.

But as the first half wore on both teams got to grips with the conditions, especially Moyne who hit the next five points in a row up to the 18th minute with the scores coming from John Hassett (2 frees), Cormac Deegan, Eanna Guilfoyle and Diarmuid Campion to put their side into a 0-6 to 0-4 lead.

And that lead was maintained until half time as the teams continued to feel each other out, with Thurles Sars’ scores coming from Sean Collins and David Keogh either side of a brace of Moyne scores from Gavin Ryan and another for Guilfoyle. The sides had it all to play for at 0-8 to 0-6 at the break.

Moyne hurled the better stuff in the first ten minutes after the restart and had extended their lead to three by the 4oth minute at 0-11 to 0-8. Diarmuid Leahy, Cormac Deegan and Diarmuid Campion all on target for Moyne while Sean Collins converted a free to go with a first of the day from David Moloney to keep the blues in touch.

Thurles needed to find their rhythm as Moyne were looking to close out the game, and the Sars’ men did going into the final quarter, with a long range David Keogh point being quickly followed by a Sean Collins free before Michael Dwyer created havoc in attack, breaking in on the square at an angle before batting the ball into the net via a deflection to put Sars ahead by the minimum with ten minutes left.

But Moyne didn’t allow it to fluster them and hit the next two points to re-take the lead, and with that momentum they found a big score, as Gavin Ryan used his pace to jink inside a defender in the 55th minute before lashing a right sided effort to the top corner.

Sarsfields never stopped coming despite that heavy blow and had the game back in the melting pot with the next two points - one of which was a big goal chance for Sean Collins who lashed his goal attempt just over the bar from close range - but Moyne secured the win with a late John Hassett free which helped them claim the Division 2 title.
