Group 2
Moycarkey Borris V Mullinahone
A winner-takes-all contest in what is one of the more straightforward groups in terms of permutations. With a win apiece and Roscrea out of the equation, it’s all about who will join Thurles Sarsfields in the quarter-finals.
It couldn’t be a more difficult call in this one as both teams have recorded good wins over an under par Roscrea team, along with losses to an impressive Thurles Sarsfields team.
Moycarkey Borris were on high after the destruction of Roscrea on the opening weekend, but they were firmly dragged back to earth by Thurles Sarsfields the last day out in a game where they were never in contention.
One positive will be the return of Kieran Morris off the bench in the first half the last day, but that came due to an injury to Chris McCullagh, but otherwise, they will be okay personnel-wise.
Mullinahone have been slightly more consistent as they ran Thurles a bit closer, and with Conor Whelan and Mikey O’Shea back home from abroad, the duo may add a timely and significant boost to their efforts. This will be a close one.
Verdict: Mullinahone
Thurles Sarsfields V Roscrea
One of the few games with nothing to be gained but for the clubs involved. Thurles Sarsfields have slowly built on each performance so far, putting together a much more complete effort in their demolition of Moycarkey Borris, dismissing whispers of a potential upset pre-match.
Aidan McCormack tends to be the heartbeat of the Sarsfields attack and with him in form the last day out, it does bode well for the Thurles club who have a defensive platform to go far again this year.
They have a full deck to choose from and with Paddy Creedon back in the frame after featuring for the second team two weeks ago, they will only be stronger.
Roscrea by contrast are at a very low ebb and are destined for the relegation scrap after losing to Mullinahone in Holycross Ballycahill in round 2.
They came into the championship with high hopes after a solid 2023 campaign but the wheels have gradually come off and regardless of the outcome, a good performance will be paramount on Liam England’s mind heading into survival mode.
Verdict: Thurles Sarsfields
