Launching the Serve Conference in LIT Thurles, Minister Kelly congratulated the campus for their innovation, calling their installation of a biomass heating system a “landmark step in improving the energy efficiency of an academic institution”.

LIT Thurles have moved to the use of wood fuel as part of its energy management programme, installing a biomass wood fuel heating system: the first campus in the country to do so.

“The Government has committed to achieving a 33% energy saving over the public sector by 2020. In order to do this we will need to see a fundamental change in the way we use energy in the public sector.

“To this extent, this installation by Thurles LIT shows innovation and commitment, two requirements that are essential for progressive, forward thinking if we are to change our energy usage”, continued the Minister.

“The energy management programme at LIT Thurles is second to non: they have trained 12 staff on energy management, developed and energy management plan and involved the staff and student in a Smart Green Society which promotes the awareness of sustainable energy”.

“I congratulate them on their fantastic achievement and their integrated approach to sustainable energy as it meets both energy efficiency and renewable energy objectives”, concluded the Minister.
