Crash Course With A Difference At Tipperary Institute for National Road Safety Week

Recently, during National Road Safety Week throughout the country we saw crosses being placed on our roadsides, advertisements in papers, etc.

In Tipperary Institute, students played their part to raise awareness among the third level students who attend the college. During that week they invited the RSA (Road Safety Authority) and the Gardai into college to talk to students about the risks of speeding, drink driving, drug driving, fatigue and the many other factors that cause the many crashes on our country roads.

The Gardai also had Alcometers to show students that they may still be over the limit the following day.

In the main corridor of the Thurles Campus students also put 183 crosses along the wall to remind people of the number of lives lost on Irish roads in 2010.

During the week they also handed out free hi-vis jackets to students,” We are happy to report that in one day alone over 500 jackets were given out” said Daragh Scott, President of the Tipperary Institute Students Union.

He added “On Thursday of the week, we had a car crash scene on campus to show students in practice what happens at a road collision,”
