O’Hara, 17, teamed up with Carlow’s Jack Courtney, 16, to produce a string of outstanding performances on Thursday that saw the Irish duo march through the competition with style and confidence.
Republic of Ireland Youth manager Paddy Cullen praised the pair for their composure and quality throughout the day.
“It’s a great achievement for the two boys,” Cullen said.
“They played really well all day and never even looked in trouble in any of their games. Their confidence is good too and hopefully that will stand to them in the final.”
The Irish pair made an impressive start, topping Group A with three flawless 3-0 wins over Egypt, Finland and Japan. They carried that form into the knockout rounds, defeating Australia’s Tristan Bognar and Andrew Nielsen 4-1 in the quarter-finals.
In the semi-final, they faced South Africa’s Deacon Swanepoel and Cheswin van Rooyen. After dropping the opening leg, Courtney and O’Hara responded superbly, reeling off four in a row to book their place in the final.
They will now take on Turkey’s Calikiran and Toprak Aras in Friday’s decider, which is scheduled for around 10am Irish time.
For O’Hara, the run to the final marks a major moment on the international stage, with hopes high that he and Courtney can go one step further and bring the title home.
