Tributes have poured in after the passing of Monty Power

A True Gentleman Remembered: The life and legacy of Tipperary man Monty Power

Life stood still on Sunday, September 21, in Boherlahan and miles beyond as the news spread of the tragic passing of Monty Power. One doesn’t have to write an epistle to describe Monty: a loving, caring, thoughtful, generous gentleman, writes Michael Dundon.

Monty lost his life prematurely in a traffic accident while accompanied by his “biker” friends. His biking trips were his pastime, and together with his heartbroken wife, Kathleen, they covered the length and breadth of Ireland.

On Sunday, his close friend Pat Lyons and other biker friends were travelling with him. Monty worked with Pat for 52 years. Needless to say, Pat is saddened beyond words. Monty was “the man” at Lyons Tyres, Thurles. He was the most obliging human being at all times. He would never see anyone stuck, and with that glint and smile, would send you out roadworthy again.

He took a great interest in sport. He played hurling with Boherlahan and was a mighty squash player.

Monty had many strings to his bow, but above all, he was a fabulous family man. He lived for Kathleen and his family. He was a very handy man and, as was seen and commented on at his reposal, his was a beautiful house and garden.

No words can express the heartbreak for Kathleen and family. The crowds of people that passed through at Monty’s reposal were a testament to the esteem in which he was held.

On Thursday, at Mass in Boherlahan celebrated by Fr. Michael Mullanny, assisted by Fr. Joe Egan, Fr. Jim Purcell, and Fr. George Renehan, there was a beautiful tribute to Monty’s life.

Monty was a man of great faith and would be proud of the accurate account of his life by Fr. Michael. Touching words with humour and truth which caused smiles and tears. Heavenly music and singing. Ye did him proud.

Monty was brought to his eternal resting place in Ardmayle, led by his “biker” friends, which was a sight to behold.

Monty, whether it was playing with Boherlahan or out in the garden for “a few pucks” with the grandchildren, you hurled like a man, you played the game. RIP.

Monty is survived by his wife, Kathleen, daughters Linda and Helena, son Martin, grandchildren, brother Seamus, and extended family.
