It was always going to be a tough assignment in this group, with Limerick king-pins Ardscoil Rís as well as one of the favourites, Nenagh CBS, providing formidable opposition. A Premier County derby will see Cashel conclude their campaign later this month.

Unfortunately, this was all about the men from the Banner who scored thirty times in sixth minutes – on the fast-running 3G pitch, at the University of Limerick’s North Campus.  There was a great support from classmates, family and clubmates for Cashel, who did show fine individual displays at times, something which is ignored by the unhealthy final score.

While the scoreboard was tight early on, recent Clare senior call-up, Harry Doherty displayed his class to push Cashel out of reach. Credit to the Premier outfit, who rallied in the closing stages, registering a goal and being unfortunate not to have another one or two with Leon Talty twice denying them with point blank saves.

Cashel will have been frustrated by wasted openings in the opening half – they registered six wides, four of which came from frees – and hand a handful of efforts drop short – as they used four free takers in the opening half.

There was early moments of quality, Conor Fogarty firing over in the opening seconds, while Charlie Hall landed a free. In between, Darragh McNamara buried a goal and when Doherty scored three points in less than three minutes, there was little doubt who was going to take the spoils.

By half-time it was 1-10 to 0-5 with Cashel scores coming from two Senan Mackey frees. and Shane Cooney of Clerihan.

The sides traded the first four points early on in the second half, but when the second goal came from Eoin O’Connor – Flannan’s sprinted for home.

Doherty added goals three and four, but only after Knockavilla Kickhams’ Mackey found the net with a low finish. He was consistent in his approach against a towering defensive unit from Ennis.

Late points from Shane Cooney and Charlie Walsh were welcomed but those in white jerseys were playing with the freedom that the scoreboard allowed them.

There was a plethora of late points from range for the winners, who were able to add substitutes who hardly diminished their challenge. Cashel, who were competitive against Ardscoil Rís, will hope to finish with some pride, in what is another daunting task – Nenagh CBS.
