‘Great sadness’ in Youghal after Tina Satchwell’s remains found

There is a “great sadness” in Youghal following the discovery of Tina Satchwell’s remains, according to the parish priest.

A man in his 50s was arrested following the discovery.

Ms Satchwell, originally from Fermoy, was 45 when last seen alive, and had been missing from her home in Youghal since March 2017.

A major search operation began at a house and surrounding grounds in Youghal on Tuesday.

The human remains were found late on Wednesday, gardai said.

Speaking to PA Media on Friday, Father Bill Bermingham said: “There is a great sadness that such a thing would have happened in such a peaceful town”.

He was called to the scene at 3pm on Thursday.

“At that time, the pathologists were just leaving the house and the local undertaker was coming with a hearse.

“He placed the coffin on the pavement outside the door and the remains were brought from the house, concealed in a cover, and placed in the coffin.

“We said the prayers for the dead there on the pavement outside the house.

“People have been wondering what happened and at least there is an answer for them now. That is in some ways, always considered a positive thing.

Heavy machinery, including a digger, was used at the property and a large screen has been erected around the building and grounds.

Locals had laid flowers outside the screen following the discovery of the remains.

He said the people of the parish continue to pray for Ms Satchwell, adding there would be public prayers this weekend.
