Locals have criticised the decision to opening a gambling hall in Nenagh

Tipperary County Council have approved planning permission for a new gaming hall on Silver Street in Nenagh, despite a large number of objections against its development and concerns from Tipperary locals.

Coalquay Leisure applied to the council for planning permission to change the use of what is currently a vacant shop unit in the centre of Nenagh to an arcade centre.

A number of objections were raised to the application, with one stating that “women and children will suffer” if it is allowed to go ahead.

A gaming hall is essentially the same concept as a casino where a variety of games of chance can be played including card games and electronic games of chance and skill.

"We do not need another gambling hall,” one objection said. "If passed, women and children will suffer. If you say no, it will help women and children”.

As well as that, the objection said that “gambling is not a business, it is a disease and you hold the cure”.

However, despite a number of objections and concerns, Tipperary County Council granted permission for the development subject to five conditions.

The conditions include that the premises only be used for the purposes outlined in the planning application, that the opening hours be restricted to 9am to 6pm Monday to Sunday, and that rubbish bins only be stored in a designated refuse area.
