Tipperary TD prompts response from HSE on miscarriage care at Limerick maternity hospital

The HSE have confirmed that there are both immediate and long-term improvements underway

UL Hospitals refute Limerick maternity 'failure' claims

Fianna Fáil TD for North Tipperary and Northwest Kilkenny has called on the Minister for Health to improve care facilities for women experiencing a miscarriage in University Maternity Hospital, Limerick. Following contact from a number of concerned constituents, Deputy O’Meara raised a series of Parliamentary Questions to the Minister for Health, emphasising the need for a separate assessment unit and off campus treatment for women experiencing a miscarriage in Limerick Maternity Hospital.

In response to Deputy O’Meara’s questions, the HSE have confirmed that there are both immediate and long-term improvements underway:

“During the first half of 2026, the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU) will be relocated to a different room within University Maternity Hospital Limerick. This will allow patients to be seen in a more private and sensitive environment, separate from women attending the Emergency Care Unit.

“Funding has been secured for a dedicated, purpose-built “wrap-around” EPAU facility, designed specifically to separate early pregnancy care from the main maternity services. Planning for this new building is in progress, and it will provide a calmer, more appropriate space for women and their partners experiencing early pregnancy complications or loss.

Speaking on the matter, Deputy O’Meara said,

“It is crucial that our healthcare system provides a safe environment that supports the physical, emotional and psychological needs of patients. This commitment from the HSE to enhance these facilities is a step in the right direction.

“I am pleased to see that immediate and long-term strategies are being implemented to ensure women and their partners receive the compassionate care they deserve.”
