Roscrea councillor Shane Lee has said residents are concerned about a lack of lighting in the Glebe playground.

He told the Tipperary Star after this week’s sitting of Thurles Municipal District Council that proper lighting would make the area safer.

“It’s the centre of the town. It’s a lovely amenity trying to enhance the area just by public lighting. And from a safety perspective as well. It’s important for the people and the residents.

“There has been antisocial behaviour that has taken place, and there are bylaws in place for the playground, but there is a struggle for residents, and obviously people won’t go into it if they are trying whatever business in there.

“So, yes they have been worried for quite some time,” said Cllr Lee.

Cllr Lee had raised the issue at this week’s meeting.

He said he has been asking the council to replace two lights in the ornamental lamp post in the playground since 2022.

The project had been previously supported by the district but has since fallen by the wayside.

Cllr Lee said that given all that has gone on in Roscrea in recent months, this was a “small project” the council could do for the community.

A representative from Tipperary County Council told Cllr Lee that it was an expense they could not justify.

The issue was not just as the councillor said about the lights but the wiring for them, and that it was not a small ask.

Cllr Lee said he did not accept that response.
