On Tuesday, April 15, Rockwell College warmly welcomed back 20 Transition Year students and travelling staff—Mrs Joan Kennedy and Mr Pat Egan—from their incredible trip to China! This memorable journey was expertly guided by Neil Clarke, CEO of the Ireland-China Cultural and Educational Centre. Neil's passion and knowledge greatly enriched the experience, facilitating insightful dialogues about digital innovation in education and arranging interactive cultural performances between our students and their Chinese counterparts. A Special Meeting with the Chinese Ambassador

A notable highlight for the Rockwell College cohort was the opportunity to meet the Chinese Ambassador to Ireland, Zhao Xiyuan. The group engaged in a thoughtful and productive discussion, exchanging perspectives on education and culture in a relaxed setting. In a gesture of goodwill and hospitality, the Ambassador joined students and staff in wearing Rockwell College scarves, marking a symbolic and memorable moment in the visit.

Exploring Shanghai’s Culture and Excitement

In Shanghai, students immersed themselves in vibrant city life, visiting the fascinating Shanghai History Museum and exploring local markets and modern shopping areas. Their time in Shanghai was perfectly rounded off with an exciting visit to Shanghai Disneyland, enjoying thrilling attractions like Roaring Rapids.

Adventure and Relaxation in Hangzhou

The excitement continued in Hangzhou, where students enthusiastically took part in various adventures at the impressive Oriental Land—a 7,500-acre activity centre—including go-karting, kayaking, climbing, and egg painting. Balanced with peaceful visits to scenic locations such as the stunning West Lake, the itinerary offered a wonderful blend of adventure and relaxation.

Authentic Cultural Experiences

Throughout their stay, students deeply experienced authentic Chinese culture, tasting local cuisine, joining traditional dance groups, and participating in hands-on cultural activities such as making Qing Tuan (traditional green rice balls), traditional tie-dye crafts, and discovering the magic of animation production.

Learning Together

A significant aspect of the trip was the collaborative educational experience. Chinese and Irish students learned side by side, taking part in robotics, carpentry, and traditional Chinese music lessons at both Shanghai Second Light Industrial School and Hangzhou High School. This educational collaboration made the trip far more than just a study tour—it became a living, hands-on exploration of Chinese traditions, creativity, and connection.

Reflections and Lasting Impact

The impact of the trip continues beyond their return. Transition Year students were invited to take part in an interview conducted by Chinese media, which will be aired soon—and the school will be sharing it on their platforms once it’s available.

The group has also been invited to give a presentation to the Chinese Embassy when they return to Dublin. It’s a great opportunity for the students to reflect on their journey, share what they’ve learned, and continue fostering the connection between our schools.

The students returned home with incredible stories, new friendships, and broader horizons. Trips like this are invaluable, shaping our students into globally-minded, culturally aware individuals.
