The success by the Clonmel Commercials U-14 Gaelic football team at the All-Ireland Feile Peil na nOg in Derry last June was recalled recently at the Town Hall.
The occasion was a reception hosted by Mayor Pat English in recognition of the team’s great achievement.
A wonderful evening was thoroughly enjoyed by the players and their parents.
Having reached the final of this prestigious competition three times in five years, only to be denied at the final hurdle, there was no denying Commercials in The Oak Leaf county this year, as they accounted for Blessington in the final. The win capped an unforgettable weekend for the group. Commercials were hosted by the Buncrana club in Donegal and travelled on Thursday, June 27. Competition began the following afternoon. The Feile Parade through the historic Bogside area of Derry was a highlight on Friday evening, as 6,000 representatives of over 200 clubs were led by dozens of bands to The Guild Hall.
On a hectic Saturday it took three wins to send Commercials to another final. A swim in the chilly waters of Lough Swilly in Buncrana relaxed the muscles on Saturday evening. Fresh and ready on Sunday morning, Commercials played with wonderful skill and determination to finally deliver the All- Ireland Peil title won previously by the club in 1982.
The Mayor of Clonmel complimented the players and praised the efforts of their parents and coaches. Council members said the club had been a major part of the life of the town down the years and it was great that the club’s future was so bright.
