McDonald's have lodged a planning application with Tipperary County Council to build a new fast-food restaurant and drive-thru in Thurles and social media has been sparked into a furore about it.

One user said: "While I do eat there occasionally the litter this company generates is for everyone to see on every road out of Cashel.

"I'm aware it's not the company but customers doing it but surely a company of its size should have technology to print number plates on packaging or do something to lower the volumes of waste it generates."

Another added: "About time, there’s nothing in Thurles anymore."

While one said: "Regardless of people’s view on McDonald’s it will bring much needed jobs to our town."

And one more said: "Please no!"

Another said: "About time."

Also included in the plans are an ESB substation and kiosk, landscaping including outdoor furniture/seating area with parasols, boundary treatments, lighting, and all associated site and engineering works necessary to facilitate the development.

If planning is granted, this would become the fifth McDonald's in the county following last year's opening of a Nenagh location.

A decision is due on the matter by November 21.
