Tipperary locals affected by organ donations joined people from all over Ireland who gathered for the Irish Kidney Association 39th Annual Service of Remembrance & Thanksgiving in Dublin during the weekend.

Around 1,600 people attended the annual event in the Church of the Holy Child, Whitehall, Dublin on Saturday 12 October. Families of deceased organ donors and transplant recipients gathered for the inter-faith service which gave thanks and paid tribute to organ donors.

The service, which was led by those from the Catholic Church, Church of Ireland and the Islamic faith, is an important annual event on the calendar for many families of organ donors, many of whom make it a priority to attend every year.

Among those who attended, was retired schoolteacher Mary Adamson from Clonmel, County Tipperary. Mary received a living donor kidney transplant as part of the paired exchange programme last year following 15 years on dialysis. Mary had previously received two kidney transplants from deceased donors.

Another retired schoolteacher from Thurles, Ann Hackett, was also in attendance. Ann received a deceased donor kidney transplant in 2022 following four years of dialysis treatment.

Also representing Tipperary, Joan Gavan, a kidney donor from Donohill, was involved in the Organising and Liturgy Committee for the service.

Healthcare professionals working alongside donor and transplant patients also joined those who gathered for the service.

For those involved, the annual service serves as a meaningful opportunity to remember their loved ones and honour the gift of life their donations have provided to others.

Following the service, organ donor families viewed the name of their deceased donor loved one inscribed in the Book of Remembrance, a roll of honour for organ donors.

The service was recorded and will be broadcast on RTÉ One on 17 November at 11am.
