Suir Dragon Paddlers are all Breast Cancer Survivors.

The club is based in Clonmel and has members from throughout Tipperary.

New members are very welcome, and recruitment campaigns are ongoing.

The aims of the club are to:

  • Raise awareness of breast cancer
  • Increase opportunities for physical activity and therefore improve the health of breast cancer survivors
  • Enjoy mutual support from others diagnosed with breast cancer.

Dragon boating is a team paddling sport on the water.

The boat can hold a crew of 22 including a helm and a drummer.

Members meet for training on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The club was formed in 2013. It is a member of the Irish Dragon Boat Association and is a registered charity.

The club participates in regattas and training events in Ireland and abroad.
Dragon Boats

Dragon Boat paddling for breast cancer survivors came about following a study by Dr Don Mc Kenzie a sports medicine physician in Canada who wanted to see if repetitive upper body exercise in those treated for breast cancer caused a condition known as Lymphoedema, a chronic swelling of the arm.

An initial group was closely monitored and followed a specialexercise and dragon boat training programme.

It found that no new cases of lymphoedema occurred, and no existing cases worsened. The first breast cancer dragon boat Abreast in a Boat was formed in 1996 and now there are over 300 teams in thirty-seven countries around the world with over 15,000 paddlers!

Suir Dragon Paddlers have registered to participate in the next world championships which are organised by The International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission (IBCPC).

The event will be held in Lac du Bourget, Aix-les-Bains, France in 2026.

Members will pay their own transport and accommodation expenses. Registration and other administrative expenses willbe covered by fundraising activities.

The IBCPC strongly believes that exercise is medicine.

Through exercise and participation in Dragon Boat paddling, breast cancer survivors both male and female can regain that part of their lives that they lost through a diagnosis of breast cancer.

The Suir Dragon Paddlers are delighted to be associated with Thurles Drama Group and this production of Ladykillers and tickets are selling fast for opening night!
