Decision to be made soon on construction of medical waste facility in Thurles
Tipperary County Council is due to make a decision soon on the constriction of a new healthcare waste treatment and recycling facility in Thurles.
Tatver Properties Ltd. submitted the application on 14 November 2024 and now the council is due to decide on the proposal by Friday, 17 January.
The application proposes the construction of a "a state-of-the-art" medical waste treatment and recycling facility, in addition to a waste transfer station in Killoran, Thurles.

The proposal includes the construction of three buildings along with all associated ancillary developments. For example: rooftop solar photovoltaic panels, a battery energy storage system, vehicle parking spaces and a separate yard for the temporary storage of container units.
The total development area will be around 3.75 hectares in size.
The facility would take in an estimated 10,000 tonnes per annum of healthcare waste for treatment and recycling. An additional 15,000 tonnes per annum of hazardous waste would also be "accepted, temporarily stored, handled and consolidated onsite for onward transfer."
The application includes an EIAR.
