BREAKING: 'Amazing young boxer,' tributes paid after sudden death of Tipperary 16-year-old

Christopher Doyle of Lahardan, Two-Mile-Borris, Thurles passed away unexpectedly at home, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday.

Christopher Doyle was a multiple National Champion, having won the 2024 National BG4 60kg title and 2023 National Junior Cadet 57kg title.

A Tipperary community has been left heartbroken after the sudden death of 16-year-old Christopher Doyle - a rising star in Irish boxing. 

Christopher Doyle of Lahardan, Two-Mile-Borris, Thurles passed away unexpectedly at home, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday. 

Predeceased by his grandparents James and Bridget Doyle, uncle Patrick, cousins Anthony, Nicki, Amber, Michael and Delilah.

Deeply regretted by his heartbroken family, mother Breda, father Christopher, Margaret and Tony his second mom and dad, sisters Bridget, Nicola, Mairead and Bridget, brothers Patrick, Anthony, David and Thomas, brother-in-law Thomas, sister-in-law Emma, nieces Ava-Rose and Rhea, godson David, uncles, aunts, grandparents Mary and Johnny, cousins, Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed community, Templemore Boxing Club and IABA colleagues, neighbours and many friends.

In a statement on social media, Templemore Boxing Club said: "It’s with deep pain, heartbreak and sorrow that we announce that the untimely death has occurred of one of our boxers Christopher Doyle.

"Christopher was a huge part of our club along with his brother Thomas and his father Chris.

"Christopher always had a big smile on his face.

"He was an amazing young boxer who already had several All Ireland titles under his belt and was due to contest his All Ireland semi final this weekend.

"His dedication to the sport was unmatched. He was a promising, bright and a shining young man.

"Our deepest sympathies go out from all at Templemore Boxing Club to Christopher’s family who are in a state of shock and devastation and are dealing with all of their unbearable pain and loss.

"There are no words to convey the magnitude of this tragedy or that can lessen the grief of his family.

"We will be closed until further notice. If any members need to speak to anyone please reach out to one of the coaches."

Reposing in Hugh Ryan's Funeral Home, Slievenamon Road, Thurles on Saturday, March 15 from 5pm to 7pm.

Arriving at the Cathedral of the Assumption, Thurles at 8pm.

Requiem Mass on Sunday, March 16 at 11am.

Burial afterwards in St Patrick's Cemetery, Thurles.

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association said: "IABA and the entire Irish boxing family would like to express our deepest condolences to the family, friends, loved ones and club mates of Templemore Boxing Club's Christopher Doyle, following his untimely passing.

"Christopher was a multiple National Champion, having won the 2024 National BG4 60kg title and 2023 National Junior Cadet 57kg title. He was to contest this 2025 National Junior 1 Championship semi final this Saturday.

"A 10 bell salute, in his honour and memory will take place before boxing this weekend. Suaimhneas agus síochán do."
