Friends and family gathered with Mary as her time with the service was fondly remembered, as people discussed the indelible mark she has left on the local community.
In a statement released following her retirement, the Tipperary library service remarked: “On Wednesday, April 23, Tipperary County Council Library Service celebrated the 47-year library career of someone who has been the heart and soul of Tipperary Studies for over 30 incredible years, Mary Guinan Darmody.
“Mary joined Library HQ in May 1978, survived the “baptism of fire” that is payroll, and never looked back.
“In 1990 she agreed to “temporarily” steer Tipperary Studies; three decades later her name is synonymous with the service.
“From trundling archive boxes across a rainy yard in Castle Avenue to masterminding the move to our purpose-built home in The Source Library in 2006, Mary has protected, expanded and championed our shared heritage every step of the way.
“She has been more than a colleague; she’s been a mentor, a friend, and a cornerstone of this community.
“Her dedication, passion, and that ever-present smile have left an indelible mark on all of us.
“Mary didn’t just preserve history; she expanded it.

“She earned her Masters with first-class honours, helped launch the Tipperary Historical Journal, and created the popular Lecture Series.
“Her collaborations with local historians like Des Marnane brought untold stories to life. And let’s not forget her incredible foresight in digitisation – over a decade ago she led the fundraising drive that kick-started our digitisation programme.
“Today, our Tipp Studies Digital website has over 3 million hits from around the world!
“Mary made it her life’s work to preserve our cultural identity, ensuring that future generations can connect with their roots.
“As she embarks on this new adventure she leaves behind a community forever grateful for her service.
“Thank you, Mary, for everything.
“Your dedication, passion, and kindness have shaped this library and this county. Enjoy every moment of retirement – you’ve earned it!”
