Refresh Thurles Tidy Towns recorded a 13-mark improvement at this year’s competition

The results of the 2026 SuperValu TidyTowns competition have been welcomed by Refresh Thurles Tidy Towns, who recorded an increase of thirteen marks on last year’s performance, achieving 362 marks. Competing in Category E, the town was heavily praised by national adjudicators for its community integration, environmental projects and vibrant streetscapes.

The official scorecard highlights steady improvement across all eight judging sections.

Adjudicators commended the visual presentation of the town, giving special mention to the ‘stunning’ pink planters on Liberty Square. Local business efforts were a major highlight of the report.

Businesses like Keanes, JJ Fitzgeralds, Hummingbird, St Vincents, and Naomi’s on Friar Street were highlighted as exemplary benchmarks for retail presentation, alongside well-maintained properties such as Stakelums, AIB and the Bus Éireann depot.

The judge gave a special, glowing mention to the beautiful new ‘Butterflies of Ireland’ signage and information panels installed along the River Walk, noting that they are a highly effective way to educate the public and successfully catch people’s attention.

On the sustainability front, judges lauded the new weatherproof space for Market 54 and praised The Green Sheep on Friar Street for its discount scheme rewarding the use of reusable cups.

Residential pride was clear to the judge, who gave high marks to Monadreen’s tree lined

avenue, Dun Lia’s stone entrance, Cabragh Court’s green space and Moyne Road’s newly resurfaced laneway.

While celebrating this brilliant thirteen mark increase, the report provides a clear roadmap for future progress and helps the group identify priority projects for the next twelve months.
