'End of an era' as Tipperary hardware store closes after more than 100 years

A well-known Tipperary store is set to close its doors in the coming weeks after over 100 years in business.

Blackburn's Hardware shop in Tipperary Town will to close its doors as the owners, Tom and Bridget Blackburn are set to retire.

The shop on O'Brien Street in Tipperary Town has been open since 1884, stocking a wide range of hardware supplies, as well as timber, glass and paints.

Three members of staff, Stephen Hayes, Pat Ryan and John Heffernan finished up in the shop on Friday, who were well-known faces in the store for many years.

Store owners Tom and Bridget will remain open in the store for the next few weeks as they sell off any remaining stock they have.

Local independent councillor John O'Heney paid tribute to the Blackburn family on social media this week.

"I presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the Blackburn Family on O'Briens Street in Tipperary Town on the occasion of their retirement.

"They will be terribly missed by the entire Town and wider area," Cllr O'Heney said.

"Happy Retirement to Tom and Bridget. We all wish you the very best and continued good health long into the future," he added.

Comments on social media wished the couple the best in their retirement.

"You've dedicated your entire life to that shop and servicing your customers requests be it big or small. You deserve a break. Best of luck," one person wrote.

Another wrote that they "will definitely be missed, one of the best shops".

"Best of luck on your retirement ye will be sorely missed a great shop and brilliant staff," another person wrote.
