Concerns have been raised across Tipperary over the condition of roads after contractors carried out works beneath road surfaces, with councillors warning that repairs are often being left below acceptable standards.
The issue was highlighted at December meetings of both the Tipperary-Cahir-Cashel Municipal District and the Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District, where members pointed to a growing number of roads left in an unsatisfactory condition following works on underground pipes.
Independent Councillor John O’Heney said the problem has become more noticeable in recent months, particularly where external contractors are involved.
“This is becoming more of an issue, and it’s sometimes when external contractors are coming into the district and completing works, they’re not putting the road back to the state in which they found it,” Cllr O’Heney told the meeting.
He added that the situation has become increasingly prevalent over the past six to twelve months, with contractors carrying out works on behalf of Uisce Éireann singled out as a particular concern.
“They’re not putting the roads back to the way in which they found it, and that’s then putting additional pressure on this council,” he said.
Cllr O’Heney cited Bridge Street in Tipperary Town as one example where the road surface had been left in a poor condition following works.
Councillors said the issue not only affects road safety and appearance but also places additional strain on council resources, as local authority crews are often required to carry out follow-up repairs.
