Tipperary hit with dangerous ice warnings as temperatures set to plunge below freezing

Ten counties across Ireland have been issued with a Status Yellow Low Temperature and Ice warning on Thursday morning that will come into effect from 11pm tonight until 8am Friday morning.

Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow, Tipperary have been issued warnings as widespread frost and some icy stretches are expected with minimum air temperatures of -3 degrees Celsius, possibly lower locally.

Possible Impacts include hazardous travelling conditions and animal welfare issues

Thursday

Today will be cold with sunny spells and scattered showers, becoming isolated later. Most of the showers will be in the north and west and some will be wintry. Highest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees in a light to moderate northwesterly breeze.

A largely dry and clear night in store but turning very cold too with temperatures falling 0 to -3 degrees leading to some frost and icy stretches. Cloudy will build from the west later in the night with the coldest temperatures in the east with generally light winds.

Friday

A mostly dry start but becoming quite cloudy later in the morning with outbreaks of rain developing along Atlantic coastal counties in a freshening southwesterly breeze. Highest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees.

Rather cloudy then Friday evening with a freshening southwesterly breeze. Rain and drizzle along Atlantic coastal counites will gradually spread through the country overnight. The rain will be heavy at times too particularly in the west. Lowest temperatures of 1 to 4 degrees.

Saturday

Wet, cloudy and unsettled to start with rain slowly clearing to the east by late morning. There will be a good deal of dry weather developing for the afternoon however it will remain overcast. Showers which could be heavy at times will push in across Munster and South Leinster during the afternoon before moving further north later. Light winds will become more moderate later with highest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees.

Another wet and overcast night with showers moving up along the east of the country which again could be heavy at times. Outbreaks of rain elsewhere with northwesterly breezes. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees.

Sunday

Rain will gradually clear away during the morning but it will remain rather cloudy. Northwesterly breezes will ease too with some sunny spells developing mainly across the south of the country during the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees.

A few dry interludes but generally cloudy with a few lingering patches of rain over Connacht and Ulster on Sunday night. More cloud will build later in the night ahead of another band of rain moving in from the south overnight. Winds will ease overnight with temperatures falling to 0 to 4 degrees so a touch of frost is possible.

Looking ahead into next week and its set to remain unsettled with spells of rain but temperatures remaining about average.
