Birdhill Tidy Village Committee’s 2025 community event will take the form of a Tradfest from Friday, August 15th to Sunday, August 17th. The weekend programme will include social dancing, busking, a dance workshop, rambling house, dog show, poetry reading, treasure hunt, hurling and soccer games, novelty games, and more — plus the ever-popular BBQ and tea rooms. Full details will follow, but for now, keep the weekend free!

The Tradfest is proudly sponsored by Shannonside Business Park. Anyone wishing to sponsor an activity or donate spot prizes can contact any committee member.

Friday, August 15th – Opening Night
The festival opens with dancing in the marquee to PJ Murrihy. The West Clare singer-songwriter rose to fame in 1988 with his chart hit Pat Murphy’s Meadow, originally a poem by J.M. Devine from the late 1930s. His other memorable recordings include My Father’s House, The Old Threshing Mill, Should I Fall Behind (a duet with Isla Grant), and The Land of the Gael. One of his most popular compositions, There’s Life in the Auld Dog Yet, has been recorded by numerous artists. Whether you’re ready to dance or simply want to enjoy his warm vocals and engaging storytelling, the Man from Mullagh is not to be missed.

Saturday, August 16th – Words and Music
The day begins with poetry reading and storytelling, featuring classic pieces, fresh compositions, and plenty of wit from the local literati — with Tipperary’s recent All-Ireland victory likely to get a mention. In the evening, the Rambling House will welcome local and visiting musicians and singers, led off by special guest Seán Ó Sé. His spirited Poc ar Buile is sure to lift the roof.

Sunday, August 17th – Heritage and Sport
At 2pm, join Orla Delaney in the marquee for a free exercise class to loosen up after the weekend’s festivities (and the summer heat!). At 4:30pm, local historian Matt Lynch will lead a guided historical walking tour to mark National Heritage Week, starting at the Village Green and lasting around 45 minutes. This will be followed by a treasure hunt in the Village and Community Park.

Also on Sunday, the Longhouse Field will host a novel hurling match between Newport and Mulcair Rovers, reviving a rivalry from over 65 years ago. This special game will feature Junior ‘C’ players who have come together this year to compete in the championship for the first time. Teams will be drawn from players hailing from the areas that traditionally supplied both clubs in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.
