Two Independent Tipperary county councillors have thrown their support behind presidential hopeful Gareth Sheridan, a 35-year-old Irish-American businessman aiming to become the youngest person ever to hold the office.
Cllr Seamie Morris from Nenagh and Cllr Liam Browne from Cashel announced their endorsements on social media in recent days.
Sheridan, originally from Terenure, Dublin, co-founded Nutriband, a Nasdaq-listed pharmaceutical company valued at around $80 million (€69 million). He is running as an independent candidate, with a campaign focused on representing younger generations and tackling issues such as housing affordability, high rents, emigration, and what he sees as a lack of representation for people under 40.
Sheridan, who holds both Irish and US citizenship, lived in America for several years before returning to Ireland in early 2025.
He is married to former Miss Ireland Heidi, and the couple have a two-year-old adopted daughter named Roe.
Cllr Browne recalled meeting Sheridan during his visit to the Tullamore Show:
“Spent an interesting morning in Tullamore today (when I finally found my way out of a bog in deepest Offaly).
“Met with a young man who’s decided to throw his hat in the ring, and look for a nomination for the Presidential election in November.
“Gareth Sheridan is 35 years old, the founder of a pharmaceutical company, married to a former Miss Ireland Heidi, with an adopted child.
“And it would be great to see him on the ballot paper.
“We need a different choice for the same old tired faces that turn up looking for another pension every time the Presidential election comes around.”
Cllr Morris met Sheridan and his family during the Nenagh Éire Óg charity walkathon, and later posted:
“Presidential Candidate Gareth Sheridan, his wife Heidi, and their child Roe visited the Nenagh Eire Og Walkathon recently and had a great day, leaving a generous donation behind for the club. He is the man for the future for all those wishing to have a future in this great country. Roe even got her face painted.”
Sheridan is currently seeking the required nominations from at least four local authorities to secure his place on the ballot for the presidential election in November. His campaign has attracted attention for its emphasis on youthful leadership and fresh ideas in Irish politics. As an independent candidate, Sheridan faces the challenge of building grassroots support without the backing of a major political party. Supporters say his business experience and outsider status could resonate with voters looking for change.
