The Oscar-winning film Room comes to The Source Arts Centre this November as part of The Source Film Club season and is one not to be missed.
Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Emma Donoghue, the film tells the story of a young woman initially known as Ma (Academy Award winner Brie Larson) who has been kept prisoner in a 10ft x 10ft enclosed space for several years and has a five year-old son, Jack (Jacob Tremblay) by her captor. While Ma is all too well aware of their horrific situation, she protects Jack from the reality of their circumstances by fuelling his imagination so that their prison seems like an entire world in itself, full of wonder. But one day she decides to tell him of another world out there, a bigger world filled with amazing possibilities and so plans a bid for freedom for them both.
Director Lenny Abrahamson (Adam and Paul, Garage) skilfully balances the nightmare scenario of mother and son being held prisoner with young Jack’s unique perspective on the world while Danny Cohen’s superb cinematography creates the illusion that their cramped living space is bigger than it actually is. But it’s the central performances of Larson and Tremblay, providing the film’s emotional heft which resonate the most in this story of the unbreakable bond between a mother and her son.
Room will be screened in the Source Arts Centre in Thurles on Wednesday, 2nd November at 8pm.
