The majority of these are in Dublin, with 7,537 people recorded as being homeless in the country's capital.

The rising homelessness figures are a "stark reminder" that action is needed, according to CEO of homeless charity Depaul.

David Carroll, Chief Executive of Depaul said: "It is critical that the government really starts to show evidence that they have a strong response to the homelessness crisis and plan to act decisively and urgently. We are keen to see more preventative measures implemented to stop the flow of families, and individuals into the harsh reality of homelessness.

"We are also hugely concerned about the potential long term impact on the mental health of those in homelessness and this increasing number further compounds the potential numbers of those facing mental health issues as a result of experiencing homelessness," he added.

"When we reflect on these latest numbers which are men, women and children living with the trauma that comes from experiencing homelessness - we are really concerned that these numbers are becoming our new, accepted normal now. The lack of coordinated action means it is likely we are going to see them continue to climb month on month."
