Major campaign to clean up communities throughout Tipperary takes place this weekend

Tipperary County Council is spearheading the Team Tipp County Clean Up campaign that runs from October 10 to 12

Council called on to  support volunteer Tipperary litter pickers during Covid-19 lockdown

Tipperary County Council is spearheading a Team Tipp County Clean Up campaign in towns, villages and rural communities throughout the Premier County between this Friday, October 10 and Sunday, October 12.

The Council is encouraging tidy towns, development and other community groups, schools, youth groups, sports clubs, businesses and individual to carry out litter picks on roadsides and other public areas in their communities this weekend.

Litter pick packs including specially branded refuse sacks, litter pickers, gloves and high-vis vests are being supplied to volunteers and groups who have registered to take part in the clean up.

Michael Moroney of Tipperary County Council’s Environment & Climate Action Section told Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District’s monthly meeting that bags of rubbish collected by volunteers over the weekend will be accepted at the Council’s five Civic Amenity Centres free of charge.

Mr Moroney pointed out that five €200 prizes will be awarded to community and school groups that take part in the Team Tipp County Clean Up.

Cloneen Fine Gael Cllr Mark Fitzgerald praised the Council at the Municipal District meeting for running the clean up campaign.
“Fair play to ye for running this great initiative,” he said.

Other councillors raised recent examples of illegal dumping in their communities with Council management.

Carrick-on-Suir Sinn Féin Cllr David Dunne reported seeing five bags of rubbish dumped in Carrickbeg in Carrick-on-Suir while Fethard based Labour Cllr Michael Brennan highlighted the dumping of a washing machine, door panels and bumpers in the vicinity of a the home of one of his constituents.

While the deadline for registering online to participate in the clean up was last Thursday, October 3, the Council said it will try to facilitate any group that still wants to take part and is seeking litter pick packs if they email: litterpick@tipperarycoco.ie

All litter collected in the specially branded bags supplied by the Council during the Clean-Up will be accepted free of charge at any of Tipperary County Council’s Civic Amenity Sites at Clonmel, Cashel, Tipperary, Roscrea and Nenagh  from Monday, October 13 to Saturday, October 18.
