EDITORIAL: New Year's resolutions worth keeping this year

Why simple, shared resolutions could make a big difference across the county this year.

As the calendar turns and the last of the Christmas lights are packed away, the talk once again turns to New Year’s resolutions.

Eat better. Move more. Spend less time on the phone. They’re familiar promises, often made with the best of intentions and quietly forgotten by the time the evenings stretch again.

But perhaps this year, in the Premier County, it’s worth thinking a little differently about what we resolve to do.

One resolution worth making is to reconnect—properly. Not just through screens, but face to face. That might mean calling in on an elderly neighbour, staying for the chat after training instead of rushing home, or supporting a local event that relies on volunteers.

In a county as spread out as ours, connection doesn’t always come easily, but it has always been our greatest asset.

Another is to mind our health, both physical and mental, without turning it into a competition. A walk along the Suir, a spin through the Galtees, or simply getting out for fresh air after work can do more good than any strict January regime. Equally important is giving ourselves permission to talk when things aren’t going well.

Looking after ourselves and one another should never feel like a weakness.

Supporting local businesses is a resolution that can help benefit not just yourself but your local community also. From family-run shops on the main streets to farmers and producers who keep the county moving, choosing local where possible keeps money, jobs and pride rooted here at home.

It’s a small decision that helped invest in the County you call home.

If people in Tipperary adopted some new year’s resolutions like those listed above, it will help make Tipperary a place people are proud to call home.

We at the Tipperary Star and The Nationalist wish a very happy New Year’s to every one of our readers.
