Scoil Mhuire in Newcastle recently welcomed members of Carrick River Rescue to the school, following a successful fundraising initiative held before Christmas.
The visit provided a wonderful opportunity for pupils and staff to meet the volunteers behind this vital local service and to learn more about the lifesaving work they carry out in our area. In the lead-up to Christmas, the school made a collective decision to hold a fundraiser for Carrick River Rescue in lieu of sending traditional Christmas gifts to staff.
This initiative was also organised in memory of former pupil Freya Tobin, who tragically passed away during the summer in a drowning accident.

Freya remains fondly remembered within the school community, and the fundraiser was a meaningful way to honour her memory while supporting an organisation dedicated to helping others in times of crisis.
Thanks to the generosity of families an impressive €600 was raised for Carrick River Rescue. The funds were formally presented during the recent visit, which was met with great appreciation by the volunteers.
During their time at the school, members of Carrick River Rescue spoke to pupils and staff about the essential work they do, including responding to water-related emergencies, searches, and rescues along local rivers and waterways.

The pupils were fascinated to hear about the training involved and the dedication required to be part of such a service, and they asked many thoughtful questions throughout the visit.
Carrick River Rescue plays a crucial role in keeping our community safe. Importantly, the organisation is made up entirely of volunteers who give their time, skills, and commitment selflessly.
They are not state funded and rely solely on donations and fundraising efforts to maintain their equipment, training, and operational readiness. Community support is therefore essential to ensure they can continue their lifesaving work.
The school is extremely proud to support Carrick River Rescue and to help raise awareness of the invaluable service they provide. "We would encourage anyone who is in a position to do so to consider supporting them," said the school.
Donations are always greatly appreciated, and Carrick River Rescue can be contacted on 083 0365724 for anyone seeking further information or wishing to contribute.
The school would like to extend their sincere thanks to the volunteers of Carrick River Rescue for taking the time to visit the school, for sharing their knowledge with our pupils, and for the outstanding service they provide to our wider community.
Their visit was both inspiring and educational, and it reinforced the importance of community spirit, generosity, and looking out for one another.
