John Joe Conwell will present a lecture to the Sr Áine Historical Society on Thursday, May 30, at 7:30pm.
Conwell is a retired school teacher from Portumna, Co. Galway, who now runs the UL local history course from the Irish Workhouse Centre in Portumna.
The lecture will focus on the Land War in Ireland, which began in 1879 in the wake of three successive years of economic downturn, culminating in a revolution over land ownership in Ireland.
This lecture details the distinct phases of the conflict as it played out on the 52,000-acre estate of the Earl of Clanricarde in south-east Galway, and its subsequent impact on other Irish estates.
Entry fee on the night is just €10 and refreshments will be served.
