AIB Munster Ladies Intermediate Club Football Championship Semi-Final
Inch Rovers 0-9
Templemore 1-5
Templemore's hopes of reaching the Munster Intermediate Club Football Championship final were dashed in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday afternoon as Inch Rovers edged a fiercely contested semi-final by the narrowest of margins.
A dramatic 57th-minute goal from Kate Nevin had brought the Tipperary champions level after they had trailed for much of the encounter, but a late free from Sorcha O’Rourke proved decisive as the Cork side secured a one-point victory.
A strong wind blowing across the pitch made conditions particularly challenging for both teams throughout the afternoon.
The crossfield wind added an extra dimension to an already demanding encounter, making accurate passing, shooting and general ball control more difficult as both sides battled to establish a foothold in the contest.
It was a disappointing conclusion to Templemore's provincial campaign, but their determined second-half fightback ensured that Inch Rovers were pushed all the way in an absorbing contest.
Templemore made the brighter start, with Fiona McHale opening the scoring from a free in the third minute. However, Inch Rovers quickly settled, with Aoife Walsh drawing the sides level before Annie Walsh edged the Cork outfit ahead with a seventh-minute free.
The home side gradually began to establish control, with O’Rourke converting her first free after 14 minutes before Ava Ashman added a point from play to open a three-point advantage.
Templemore struggled to turn possession into scores during this period, with Neassa Towey narrowly off target from two placed balls as the Tipperary representatives sought to establish a foothold in the contest.
Caithyn Treacy provided a much-needed response with a point from play in the 22nd minute, reducing the deficit to two, but Inch Rovers finished the opening period strongly.
Another O’Rourke free, followed by an Annie Walsh point from play, sent the Cork side into the interval holding a 0-6 to 0-2 advantage.
Facing a four-point deficit, Templemore emerged with renewed determination after the restart.
Treacy immediately made her presence felt, splitting the posts from play in the 33rd minute, before Emma Fitzpatrick followed with another effort five minutes later.
Suddenly, the gap was down to just two points, with Templemore enjoying their best spell of the contest.
O’Rourke steadied Inch Rovers with another converted free, but Towey responded in the 42nd minute to keep the Tipperary side firmly in contention at 0-7 to 0-5.
With the strong crossfield wind continuing to test both teams, scores remained hard-earned as the contest developed into a closely fought battle.
Inch Rovers regained a three-point cushion when Grace Rooney found the target from play in the 47th minute.
Templemore introduced fresh legs as they searched for a way back into the game, with Julie Grey, Gráinne Gleeson and Jennifer Marnell among those entering the action during the second half.
Despite their efforts, the Cork side continued to protect their advantage, and as the match entered its closing stages, Inch Rovers looked well positioned to progress.
However, Templemore were far from finished. With just over three minutes of normal time remaining, Kate Nevin produced the moment that brought Templemore roaring back into contention.
Nevin found the net in the 57th minute, her goal from play wiping out the three-point deficit and bringing the teams level at 1-5 to 0-8.
It was a dramatic turnaround for the Tipperary champions, who had trailed throughout much of the afternoon but suddenly found themselves within touching distance of a place in the provincial decider.
The closing minutes were tense as both sides searched for the score that would settle the contest.
Unfortunately for Templemore, it was Inch Rovers who found that crucial breakthrough. O’Rourke, who had been a consistent source of scores for the Cork side, stepped up to convert her fourth free in the 61st minute, restoring a slender one-point lead.
Templemore battled to find an equaliser during the remaining minutes, but the Inch Rovers defence held firm, and the final whistle confirmed a 0-9 to 1-5 victory for the Cork representatives.
For Inch Rovers, O’Rourke proved the match-winner with four points from frees, while Annie Walsh contributed two important scores.
For Templemore, Treacy impressed with two points from play, while Nevin's late goal almost completed a remarkable comeback. Emma Fitzpatrick, Neassa Towey and Fiona McHale also contributed to the scoreboard.
Although ultimately falling just short, Templemore can reflect on a determined performance in difficult, windy conditions, particularly after the interval, when they fought their way back from a four-point deficit to leave the outcome in doubt until the closing moments.
Having secured the Tipperary Intermediate title and progressed to the Munster semi-final, the club's provincial campaign ended in narrow defeat, with Inch Rovers advancing to the Munster final.
