A ten bedroom Georgian mansion once home to Napoleon Bonaparte's Irish physician has come on the market in North Tipperary for €475,000.

Lissaniskey House, built circa 1770, is set on a ten acre stretch of land with walled gardens just off the M7 motorway between Toomavara village and the busy town of Nenagh.

The house, which is a protected structure, is of traditional construction beneath a slate roof. It is entered via stone steps and the accommodation is over three principal floors and a basement.

Among the many feature points of the property is an attractive bell-mouthed entrance with a stone wall. Internally the property retains many of its period features including original cornicing, sash and case windows, ceiling rose and architraves.

A sweeping driveway with a post and rail fence and mature trees leads to the front of the house which overlooks expansive, uninterrupted views over the Tipperary landscape.

Situated to the rear of the house is a range of outbuildings and a concrete yard with covered stores which is accessed off the main driveway.

The property was once owned by a branch of the Pepper family in the 19th century and was occupied by Simon Pepper in 1814 and by R. Smithwick in 1837 who is thought to be connected to the Smithwick brewery. 

Dr. Barry O’Meara, Napoleon Bonaparte's doctor, is believed to have resided at the house sometime in the late 1790’s to 1810 prior to entering the Navy as an medical officer. He was the senior surgeon on the HMS Bellerophon when Napoleon surrendered at La Rochelle in July 1815.

The property was subsequently purchased by the Sheehan family in the 1970’s. Earlier this month the contents of Lissaniskey House were included in an auction by Sheppard’s Auction House in Durrow Co. Laois.

Lissaniskey House is being offered with a guide price of €475,000 and the sale is being overseen by Savill's Ireland.
